Do Kangaroos make good petting zoo animals
No. Some kangaroo species are worse than others but all are a poor choice for anyone who doesn't have extensive experience with wild animals and a nice pasture.
Anyone from Australia can confirm roos can indeed be defensive animals and can be problematic around people if not handled properly.
Also one doesn't simply purchase “multiple joeys". They have to be weaned before a sale (don't buy from a breeder, this is a bad idea) and the males have to be neutered. Spaying a female can cause internal troubles followed by death. Mating season poses a problem for any group of kangaroos, related or not, or even humans or other animals.
They are potty trainable but have frequent accidents and you don't get to choose WHERE they get trained to go, and combined with how active they are cannot be kept indoors. Now get ready to make a run and stable.
What happens if your outdoor roo escapes? It can be put down immediately if it bites or hurts someone, and you will be the one charged with the escaped roo problem. They probably won't be legal anymore after that where you live if they are legal to begin with.
I did know someone personally who had decades experience keeping Bennett's wallabies (which are legal in my state, although they shouldn't be) and while in experienced hands this species can be a good outdoor animal for those with space and loads experience, this individual is a marsupial zoologist and the exception to the rule. He also had a barn for the wallabies and a huge pasture of edible weeds and veggies for them, and was constantly composting the feces. All these animals were adopted out from other neglectful owners. So it was basically a high maintenance sanctuary.
This is not an animal that should be a pet.
